Disciple-Making A.D. 33

Disciple-Making A.D. 33

Passage: Matthew 28:18-20

Preacher: Bill Trenckmann

Series: Disciple-Making A.D. 33

Category: Discipleship

Keywords: making disciples, discipleship

Summary:

Jesus told us to go and make disciples, and yet, many believers hesitate to become involved because they have not been discipled and don't think that they can do it. So they mentally relegate this process to church leaders and church programs. Yet there is great joy and mutual growth to be found in the process of life-to-life disciple-making. Using the Word of God as the prime tool, believers can disciple/edify one another as they meet together in intimate relationships with 2 or 3 others on a weekly basis. The key factor is the transparent sharing of God's Word. The Holy Spirit is the teacher. The result? A deepening love for one another in the Body of Christ.

Detail:

Making Disciples - Matthew 28:18-20

What did Jesus not say?

to build churches, to prophesy, to preach, to pray, to heal

These are elements involved in making disciples, but they are only a part of the whole process.

What does it mean to “make disciples?

“teaching them to obey all that I commanded you...”

What summarizes all that Jesus taught them?

                        Matthew 22:35-40

What marks disciples?  What makes them distinct?

                        John 13:34,35

Love is the foundation of effective discipleship.

How did Jesus make disciples?  What was his strategy, his methodology?

1. Jesus made disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit

Mt 3:16 – at his baptism

Luke 4:14 – “And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.”

Our greatest fear in disciple-making, is that we won’t be a good example, or that we won’t             know what to say.  How might the Holy Spirit help us with these issues?

Jn 14:16 – “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper,”

Eph 4:15,16 – “but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is     the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what   every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth          of the body for the building up of itself in love.”

Jn 14:12 – “...he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works         than these he will do:”

                        greater works – more disciples

2.  Jesus made disciples by teaching them the words of the Father

John 7:16 – “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.”

John 14:24 – “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you         hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”

What has the Father taught you that you could share with someone else?

                        life lessons/Bible themes

What has God given us as a prime tool in disciple-making?

What is God teaching you through the reading of His Word that you could be sharing with one       other person every week?

3.  Jesus made disciples by building relationships, by invitation – “Come and See” - John 1:39

He spent most of his time with the 12 and some extra time with the 3, some time with the 70,       and a few occasions with the crowds and others

He started from the bottom up, not the top down. – not with the leaders of Judaism

Disciple-making is more than a class, more than information; it centers in a love relationship                      with others in the body of Christ which includes spiritual issues

Who could you enter into a personal spiritual relationship with? 1 to 1, or 1 to 2?

4.  Jesus made disciples by entering into life and taking on the practical issues of the day.

            Deuteronomy 6:7-9

He ate with tax gatherers and sinners

He understood and used the culture of his day to illustrate spiritual             truth

parable of the soil, the lost coin, the lost sheep, the vineyard

            Jn 4 -the Samaritan woman

Jn 8 – the woman taken in adultery

Mt 16 – trip to Caesarea Philippi

Mt 18:21-35 – he answered questions

How many times do I have to forgive my brother?

            Sabbath keeping

            paying taxes to Rome

the hyprocrisy of the Jewish leaders

            divorce, remarriage  Mt 19

            the role of women

Disciple-making involves more than theology and theory; it involves how we love our neighbor in daily life.

What are the practical issues of life today that you could speak into from a biblical perspective?

 Conclusion:

Christ not only gave the command to make disciples, He also made it possible by giving us the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Every growing Christian can disciple somebody...
